Mangaluru: Three students who went for a swim in the Phalguni River near Barkaje dam in Venoor police station limits, drowned on Wednesday.
Preliminary reports suggest that the deceased are Lawrence from Moodbidri, Suraj from Belthangady, and Jaison from Vagga in Bantwal. All were first-year nursing students.
According to police, the incident occurred at 5.30 pm. All three went to the house of their friend on account of a church feast. After lunch, around five friends visited the river near the dam, and entered the water for swimming, when they were swept away in the current. It is suspected that on seeing two persons drowning, Jaison went to rescue them. The fire and emergency services personnel and police rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies.
