Chennai: More than 100 high-engine bikes involved in illegal racing have been impounded so far this month as Tambaram traffic police have cracked down on bike racing along East Coast Road (ECR) and Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram Road, OMR).
Police ramped up their surveillance, particularly over the weekends, to target areas known for such activities. Complaints from the public about two-wheelers speeding on the ECR and OMR, endangering the safety of both the riders and pedestrians, led to the crackdown. This team, headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Samay Singh Meena, conducted vehicle checks to prevent accidents and maintain public safety.
According to police, many of the bikers were found to conceal their number plates in an attempt to avoid detection by CCTV cameras. The bikers used various methods, including stickers and cloths like handkerchiefs, to cover their plates and evade identification while engaging in dangerous racing.
Deputy Commissioner Samay Singh Meena said, "we have increased our vigilance to stop such dangerous activities. While several racers have been booked for overspeeding and reckless driving, we have also decided to give some young offenders a chance to reform."
Among those detained were mostly students, who were let off with a warning after signing a bond at the police station, pledging not to engage in such activities in the future. "This is a preventive measure to ensure these young individuals do not repeat their behaviour. We hope this will make them realise the consequences of their actions. These reckless races not only endanger the lives of the riders but also put innocent bystanders at risk," the deputy commissioner added.
