Panaji: Shahid Rafi, the son of legendary singer Mohammed Rafi, on Tuesday said he will make a biography of his father and the film will be announced in Dec. Shahid said a contract has already been signed with filmmaker Umesh Shukla of ‘Oh My God!’ fame.
Shahid was speaking at a session organised at Iffi to celebrate the birth centenary year of Rafi.
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai and signer Sonu Nigam, who were part of the panel discussion on Rafi, said that no one made a film on Rafi all these years as the singer was highly uncontroversial, lived very humbly, and almost never socialised.
Shahid said that Rafi never allowed his children to know just how big a success he was. “He would tell us, ‘Do you know I sang for Amitabh Bachchan today’. We would ask him questions like how tall Amitabh Bachchan is, what watch or shoes he was wearing,” Shahid said. “He would play along and actually describe it all to us.”
Singer Anuradha Paudwal said she had the opportunity to sing 35 songs with Rafi. She recalled how he was once performing in Suriname, when the tickets to the concert sold out.
“When he was flying back, thousands of people gathered at the airport. When he inquired and was told that the people have gathered because they missed his performance, he called for a microphone at the airport and performed there,” Paudwal said.
