Ahmedabad: Taking a cue from Gujarat University, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has made helmets mandatory for all students and staff using two-wheelers at its affiliated institutions and departments.
The move comes as police across the state intensify enforcement of helmet regulations. The state govt had earlier made helmets compulsory for all govt employees, prompting universities to follow suit.
GTU has issued a circular to its affiliated institutions and postgraduate schools stressing the importance of road safety. The directive underscores that wearing helmets was a simple yet crucial measure to prevent serious injuries.
The circular also points out that under the Motor Vehicles Act, both riders and pillion passengers on two-wheelers must wear helmets. Gujarat high court has initiated a suo motu writ petition enforcing this requirement.
