Panaji: Curchorem police have arrested a woman and a bank manager in connection with cheating the bank’s customer of Rs 30 lakh. The accused have been identified as Ananth Jhadhav and Tanvi Vast.
Police said that Rosalina Dias, a resident of Curchorem, visited the bank on July 2 to deposit her gold ornaments. Police suspect that Vast, who was working at the branch as a representative of a staffing firm, swapped the ornaments with counterfeit jewellery. These included a necklace, two chains, five bangles, two bracelets, two rings, and a pair of earrings — all worth Rs 25 lakh.
Dias learned on Nov 18 that she had been cheated and filed a police complaint. Police said that Vast, without the knowledge and consent of Dias, also allegedly transferred Rs 5.5 lakh into her account from the complainant’s accounts through mobile banking.
Vast was arrested and subsequently, branch manager Jhadhav was made a co-accused for his alleged involvement in the case and was also arrested. They were produced before a judicial magistrate first class and were sent to two-day police custody. Further investigation is under way.
