Chandigarh: Punjab health minister Dr Balbir Singh on Tuesday launched Sirjan, an app aimed at enhancing maternal and newborn care by equipping healthcare providers with digital tools for comprehensive support during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal period.
The launch was attended by National Health Mission director and Punjab special secretary (health) Ghanshyam Thori, director (family welfare) Dr Jasminder, and deputy director (mother and child, health) Dr Navjot.
Clerk spends 1.2cr in 14 years, held
Chandigarh: The vigilance bureau has arrested Jaswinder Singh, a clerk in the office of the registrar of births and deaths, Hoshiarpur civil surgeon, for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. A vigilance bureau spokesperson said Jaswinder was found to have incurred expenditure of Rs 1.23 crore from Jan 1, 2002, to Dec 31, 2016. However, his total income during the period was Rs 88.15 lakh.
Campaign against child marriage
Chandigarh: Punjab govt is going to host a statewide oath-taking ceremony on Wednesday as part of “Child Marriage-Free India” campaign. State govt has decided to broadcast the event via a webcast link to unite participants. Punjab minister for social security, women and child development Dr Baljit Kaur on Tuesday said the event’s mission is to eliminate child marriage and safeguard children’s future.
After drone, BSF finds its retriever
Amritsar: BSF on Tuesday caught an Indian smuggler retrieving a Pakistani drone-delivered drug packet from Ballaharwal village here. After spotting the drone, BSF seized a packet of 495 gram heroin in an ambush-cum-search operation, in which it also held the motorcyclist who had come to fetch it. A phone has been seized from the man from Talwandi Rai Dadu village in Ajnala tehsil.
Front alleges bias in teacher promotions
Chandigarh: The Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF) Punjab, in a statement on Tuesday, accused state education department of forcing primary teachers to forfeit promotions by not disclosing all vacant posts of master cadre in Punjab schools during the station selection process.

Rajasthan cops arrest middleman, bust Pakistan-based drone-delivered heroin racket
Rajasthan police apprehended a middleman, Gurmej Singh, involved in a Pakistan-sourced heroin smuggling ring using drones. Singh confessed to receiving Rs 50,000 per 1-2 kg consignment, with each kilogram valued at Rs 6 crore. He facilitated over 4 kg of heroin delivery in October alone.
