Guwahati: Continuous and impartial efforts in the Samaguri assembly constituency since 2016, after the BJP established its inaugural govt in the state, have culminated in the party's triumph in the bypolls, despite initial rejection and hostility from Congress workers during the campaign period, articulated CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
While congratulating the victors at the party's state headquarters on Sunday evening, the CM alleged that Congress workers attempted to assault him with stones and sticks during his campaign visit to Samaguri for the 2016 assembly polls.“Despite video evidence, I refrained from filing any cases against them. Following the BJP’s policy of “zero appeasement and justice for all”, I continued to work impartially and patiently. Today, through the diligent efforts of our esteemed party workers, Diplu Ranjan Sarmah's triumph in Samaguri has fulfilled a longstanding aspiration," he added.
He further said securing Samaguri, which comprises over 65% minority votes, ending Congress’s 24-year stronghold, marks a significant achievement for the party ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Furthermore, Sarma highlighted that the noteworthy aspect of the byelections was the Behali assembly constituency, where BJP awarded a ticket to a tea garden watchman's child who subsequently secured victory. "Our objective was to witness how this individual from a modest background could succeed," he added.
It warrants mention that prior to the polls, Sarma firmly criticised Congress for nominating former Samaguri MLA and current Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain's son Tanzil instead of offering the opportunity to other deserving party workers.
Subsequently, Diplu Ranjan Sarmah said the mandate from the Samaguri constituency reflects the people-centric policies and governance initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Sarma.
He emphasised that people have lost faith in Congress and grown weary of their approach. He affirmed that BJP's 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' motto has garnered widespread support.
