Bengaluru: A gang of thieves broke an automated teller machine kiosk installed near Anekal in Bengaluru Rural on Monday midnight and carried away its cash chest in a mini goods vehicle. However, they abandoned the chest containing Rs 12.6 lakh cash at a farm after villagers reached the spot on hearing the noise of breaking it with iron rods and a shovel.
The drama unfolded at Manchahalli village on the outskirts of Anekal when miscreants cut open the kiosk with sharp weapons and removed its cash chest in the wee hours. "The CCTV camera of the kiosk is defunct, and there is no security guard. After loading the chest onto a vehicle, they drove to a nearby farm, around three kilometres away," an officer said.
They were trying to open the chest when some villagers walked in to the field after hearing the loud noise of hitting the metal box. "On seeing them, the miscreants ran away. They are non-professionals and local residents. We will nab them soon," he said.
The bank officials, who later arrived at the spot, opened the chest with keys and Rs 12.6 lakh was intact.
