Guwahati: Manipur's prominent Meitei umbrella group, Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), on Tuesday called for "immediate boycott" of Union home minister Amit Shah and a two-day complete shutdown of both state and central govt offices in the state starting Wednesday.
The state govt on Tuesday issued a notfication declaring closure of all schools in the Imphal Valley for an indefinte period. In addition, COCOMI also called for immediate action against the 10 Kuki MLAs, accusing them of compromising the state's territorial integrity.
Addressing reporters, COCOMI coordinator Thokchom Somorendro said, "The meeting of the NDA legislators on Nov 18 had resolved for removal of AFSPA and to conduct extensive operations against Kuki militants within seven days and had also assured that if no action was taken, the govt decide the next course of action in consultation with the people. But the govt has failed to deliver its resolutions within the stipulated time frame."
He alleged that the state is in the grip of a "proxy war orchestrated by the Centre" , and so "we have decided to boycott Union home minister Amit Shah with immediate effect as he has failed to resolve the crisis," Somorendro said.
"All offices of state and central government will be shut down for two days from Wednesday. However, essential services and educational institutions will be exempted from the shutdown," Somorendro said.
Somorendro said the seven-day ultimatum issued by COCOMI to the govt has lapsed, prompting the committee to proceed with the agitation as previously announced.
The demands include a review of the AFSPA which was recently re-imposed in areas under jurisdiction of six police stations in five districts, identification and prosecuting those responsible for abduction and killing of the three women and three minors in Jiribam, and declaring the armed outfit involved as a terrorist group.
