Ola Electric, led by Bhavish Aggarwal, on Tuesday (November 26) announced its latest offerings, the Ola S1 Z and Gig range of electric scooters, priced from ₹39,000.
Designed for affordability and accessibility, these models come with an innovative portable battery pack, the Ola PowerPod, which also functions as a home inverter.
Reservations for the S1 Z and Gig range are now open, with deliveries expected to commence in April 2025.
The Ola PowerPod, priced at ₹9,999, is a portable inverter with a 1.5 kWh battery and a maximum output of 500W. It is designed to power essential household devices such as LED bulbs, ceiling fans, TVs, mobile chargers, and Wi-Fi routers for up to three hours.
Targeted at semi-urban and rural households, the PowerPod offers a sustainable and affordable solution for areas with unstable electricity. Ola Electric highlights it as a practical energy alternative for everyday needs.
Last week, Aggarwal said that he is working on something very exciting and an announcement is coming this week. This follows Aggarwal's earlier statements about Ola Electric's ambitious plans for domestically manufacturing lithium-ion cells.
Speaking to CNBC-TV18 in July, Aggarwal revealed that the company is gearing up to integrate its indigenously developed cells into its electric vehicles (EVs) by early next year.
He suggested that integrating their own cells would make EVs more affordable. "So far, we have not even brought our own cells into the picture, which will be a core anchor to improve the cost of our EVs," Aggarwal said.
"We have been investing in cells because we believe the future of EVs in India hinges on developing core technology domestically. We need to build the lithium cell in India for the electric industry," he added.
Ola Electric’s Gigafactory, under the leadership of battery manufacturing veteran Hyun Shik Park, plays a crucial role in this initiative. Park, who previously spent over 36 years with South Korea's LG, is overseeing mass production of cells at the facility.
Notably, Park received the highest compensation package in the company last fiscal year, underscoring the strategic importance of the Gigafactory.
