Rapides Parish deputy, second person shot Thursday in disturbance at Alexandria facility

A disturbance call led to a Rapides Parish Sheriff's deputy and another person being shot on Thursday night, according to a news release.

Deputies had been sent to a facility in the 6400 block of Masonic Drive about 7 p.m. because of a disturbance between a patient and employees, reads a sheriff's office news release.

"Upon arrival, deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation with the patient, at which time the patient started fighting with the deputies," it reads.

During the struggle, the unidentified patient got one of the deputies' weapon and shot the deputy in the upper thigh, it reads.

The other deputy then shot the patient in the torso.

"Medical aid was immediately rendered to the deputy and the patient," reads the release. "Employees of the facility also assisted."

An Alexandria Police Department patrol sergeant who had come to the scene to help took the wounded deputy to a hospital. The deputy was treated and later released.

The patient was taken to a hospital by Acadian Ambulance and remains hospitalized. No information was released about the patient's condition.

The shooting is being investigated by the Central Louisiana Critical Incident Response Team, a group of certified investigators from several parishes, reads the release.

The team that responded Thursday night includes the Grant, Beauregard and Claiborne parish sheriff offices. An investigation is continuing.
