Chennai: Tamil Nadu's first exclusive, state-of-the-art boxing arena and training facility, coming up in Gopalapuram, is set to be ready by Jan 2025. Spread over 52,000 sq ft, the facility aims to nurture aspiring boxers with world-class infrastructure.
Construction of the air-conditioned facility began in Dec 2023 and is nearing completion, with only roofing and interior finishes left.Once operational, it will serve as the state's premier boxing training centre, featuring a spacious main ring with tiered spectator seating for tournaments and exhibitions.
The training centre will be equipped with cutting-edge amenities, including heavy bags, speed bags, specialised strength and agility machines, and comprehensive locker room facilities with showers.
"This facility will serve as the base for boxing in Chennai. Quality coaches will be on board, and it will host several competitions," said SDAT member-secretary J Meghanath Reddy.
However, the Tamil Nadu boxing association has called for additional facilities and concessions. "The govt should consider providing dormitories for out-of-state coaches and managers. Also, the current rental per day is steep. Along with room rent, organising tournaments becomes a financial burden," said a member of the Tamil Nadu boxing association.
Veterans and enthusiasts have also voiced concerns over the misuse of such sports facilities for non-sporting events. "Stadiums like this should be exclusively used to promote sports. Renting them out for political or cinema events damages infrastructure and leaves the premises dirty," said a veteran boxer.
Once completed, the facility is expected to elevate the boxing ecosystem in Tamil Nadu, fostering new talent and raising the profile of the sport in the region. "But care should be taken to appoint NIS-qualified coaches alone. Boxing has now become commercial. Many who completed short-term courses and with no experience are taking classes," said Pon Bhaskaran, president, Tamil Nadu boxing association.
