Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has urged the Punjab govt and the State Election Commission not to hold the local body elections during the martyrdom fortnight of the four Sahibzaadas and Mata Gujri, which takes place from Dec 15 to Dec 31.
Senior Akali Dal leader and former education minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said during this period, millions of people visit religious places associated with this unparalleled history of sacrifices, to pay their respects.

Therefore, any election during this period will intervene with the peaceful and holy atmosphere and hurt their religious sentiments, he said.
The SAD leader further said while elections to local bodies were important, historic days should be taken into consideration when deciding the dates for the elections.
