Hyderabad: As many as 52,080 motorists have been nabbed for drunk driving by the city traffic police so far this year.
According to additional commissioner of police (Traffic) Viswa Prasad, a total of 13,933 motorists were caught for drunk driving in the last three months and 13,188 challans have already been filed.
"In the last three months, 824 drunk drivers were sentenced to imprisonment for between one and 10 days and 227 drunk drivers were sentenced to two days of community service. Besides, 99 driving licences were suspended by the RTO for two to six months on the orders of magistrates," Prasad said in a press note.
The police collected Rs 2.87 crore from the convicted motorists. During the analysis, the police found that 633 motorists who were caught had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 200 mg/100 ml. "Of the 13,933 motorists caught, 85% are two-wheelers. The maximum sentence handed down recently was 20 days," said police.
