Chandigarh: After a wait of 14 months, the Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC) is all set get a chairperson and two members as an empowered committee of the govt headed by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini has reportedly finalised the names for the rights body.
In the absence of members and chairperson, the work of the commission had come to a standstill and complaints had been piling up in its office here.

As per information, CM Nayab Singh Saini, additional chief secretary (home) Anurag Rastogi and Haryana assembly speaker Harvinder Kalyan on Saturday met to discuss and finalise the names. Notably, the Haryana Human Rights Act provides for the leader of opposition as one of the members in the selection of the chairperson and the members of the commission. But since the name of the LoP has not been finalised so far, the meeting was carried out without the leader of the opposition.

Sources said the committee which met on Saturday also ascertained whether they could proceed without the LoP; and after studying the Act, the committee went ahead with its move to finalise the names.
After finalising three names, the file has been forwarded to Haryana governor Bandaru Dattatreya for final appointment and notification, the sources added.
Initially, the commission was represented by chairperson Justice K C Puri (retd) and member Deep Bhatia. While Justice Puri held the office till April 2023, Bhatia served as the only member and officiated as the head of the body till his tenure ended in Sept 2023. A Kaithal resident then moved the Punjab and Haryana high court and following its directions, the Haryana govt had assured the court of filling the vacancies.
