Vadodara: The civic body's drive against encroachments in sensitive parts of the city continued for the fourth straight day, with Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) and city police teams clearing streets in Navapura and its vicinity. There was a ruckus during the drive when a mob managed to unload an impounded handcart from a truck.
The drive began in the morning in the lane adjacent to Apsara Complex, till Sharafi Hall. It later covered Mehboobpura, Khatkiwad and other localities in Navapura. Elaborate police security was maintained for the drive.
In Mehboobpura, a mob gathered, and people climbed on to the truck carrying impounded handcarts and removed one. Police intervened and made sure the handcart was loaded back on the truck. In the first half of the day, 10 truckloads of material such as handcarts were seized by VMC teams.
Later in the day, VMC and police teams conducted a drive in areas where encroachments were removed earlier this week. These included Bhutadijhampa, Nagarwada, Laljikui, Machhipith, Salatwada and Kirti Stambh. Two truckloads of material were seized from these areas. Two sheds were also removed in the Bhutadi Zampa area.
Activist says minorities being targeted
Activist and lawyer Shaukat Indori submitted a memorandum to the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) commissioner stating that areas of the minority community were being targeted during the encroachment drive. Indori said the murder was a condemnable act and was being investigated. He added that the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) started the drive after the murder. He pointed out that the minority community was being targeted as the accused belonged to the community. He said that the right to employment was being snatched away from citizens by the drive and the drive was causing insecurity.
