DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand HC admitted a plea by minority organisation Alpsankhayak Seva Samiti (ASS) and directed Uttarkashi DM and SP to ensure stringent security around Jama Masjid, which right-wing groups claim is illegal.
"In an oral observation, HC said we are not a theocracy but a country governed by the rule of law and no one should indulge in hate speech and threats of destruction," petitioner's counsel Kartikeya Hari Gupta said.
The division bench of acting Chief Justice Manoj Tiwari and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal accepted the plea seeking court's intervention to prevent a mahapanchayat, called by right-wing groups on Dec 1, against Uttarkashi town's Jama Masjid.
The court also directed to list the plea as a fresh case on Nov 27, said Gupta. HC directed the state to take explicit direction from DGP to maintain law and order.
