Dhanbad holds significant importance as an assembly constituency in Jharkhand. In the 2024 assembly elections, BJP's Raj Sinha would be contesting against Ajay Dubey of Congress.

The Congress party’s last-minute nomination of Ajay Dubey for the Dhanbad assembly seat had also sparked debate about the party’s chances of breaking BJP’s long-standing dominance in the constituency.
In the 2019 assembly elections, Raj Sinha from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the seat with 120,773 votes. His closest rival, Mannan Mallik from the Indian National Congress, received 90,144 votes, while independent candidate Ranjit Singh, also known as Bablu Singh, got 2,852 votes.

In the 2014 assembly elections, Raj Sinha won again with 132,091 votes, defeating Mannan Mallik, who received 79,094 votes, and Ramesh Kumar Rahi from JVM(P), who secured 4,195 votes.
