Lucknow: Seven students of Gorakhpur's BRD Medical College were suspended for three months on Friday following allegations of ragging against them.
The incident reportedly occurred on Nov 10, when students from the 2024 batch, returning from Chhath Puja holidays, were in the Rajendra Hostel. Seven seniors from the 2023 batch allegedly entered the hostel in the night and stayed for about 30 minutes without authorization.
The matter came to light after an anonymous email complaint was sent to the college's anti-ragging cell, prompting immediate action by the authorities. A review of CCTV footage confirmed the seniors' unauthorised entry into the hostel, although no direct evidence of ragging was found.
The suspended students claimed they had entered the hostel to form a cricket team. However, they neither informed the college administration nor sought permission for their entry.
"We received a complaint through an email and found that senior students entered the juniors' hostel without permission, which is a serious violation of discipline. Although no proof of ragging was found, such acts disrupt the campus atmosphere and will not be tolerated. The guilty students have been suspended for three months," said Ramkumar Jaiswal, Principal of BRD Medical College.
During the suspension period, the students will not be allowed to attend classes and will remain under the supervision of their parents, he said, adding that stricter measures would be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
"The guilty students will have to submit an affidavit, and any further breach of discipline will attract even harsher action," he added.
