Chandigarh: Students from the Panjab University Bachao Morcha met with resistance from the Chandigarh police and UT administration as they attempted to protest at SD College and Post Graduate Govt College-11.
Student groups like Sath and SOI, along with some PU senators, have been pressing for senate elections, which have been delayed since October 31 when the previous term had ended.
The protest, demanding the restoration of senate elections, was initially blocked by the authorities, who prevented the students from entering the college, which the protesters deemed an infringement on their democratic rights. While the protesters were able to enter SD College later, they were still unable to gain access to PGGC-11.
The convenor of the “Panjab University Bachao Morcha,” Rimlajot Singh, said that Punjab has always struggled for its rights with Delhi, and this time too, there is a conspiracy behind not conducting the Senate elections—aimed at taking control of Punjab’s education system. Previously, the central government’s harmful policies had destroyed Punjab’s agriculture and water resources, and now this harmful policy is aimed at dismantling Punjab’s education system and academic institutions. Students strongly supported the protest and the demonstration in large numbers.
