Kolkata: The special cell of Delhi Police, with help from Bengal Police units, apprehended an individual from East Midnapore linked to the cybersecurity breach at a cryptocurrency exchange company, which led to the theft of digital assets worth Rs 2,000 crore.
SK Masud Alam allegedly established a fraudulent account used in the attack. According to a charge sheet filed by Delhi Police, Alam created a false account under the fake identity of Souvik Mondal. This account was subsequently sold via Telegram to M Hasan, who allegedly orchestrated the breach at the crypto exchange. The Delhi Police's Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit discovered that criminals accessed the company's hot wallet and attempted to compromise the cold wallet, an offline storage system with enhanced security measures.
Investigators found no signs of unauthorised system access at the company, which cooperated by providing KYC information and transaction records.
Police had earlier seized laptops to examine potential misuse of multi-signature wallets.
The charge sheet indicated further investigation into the role of Alam's other family members, which will be detailed in a supplementary document.
In July this year, the prominent Indian cryptocurrency platform experienced a security breach resulting in the loss of digital assets. The attack affected approximately 45% of the company's holdings.
