Lucknow: A delegation of Samajwadi Party corporators and functionaries met mayor Sushma Kharakwal on Thursday and submitted a memorandum demanding that Munshipulia Crossing and Ismailganj (Ward I) be named after party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav whose birth anniversary will be celebrated on Friday.
The delegation also demanded a statue of Mulayam be installed at Munshipulia intersection.
The delegation said that in the past, many localities, crossroads and wards were named after national icons, former prime ministers, former chief ministers and social workers and even statues were installed. "Following the same tradition, Lucknow Nagar Nigam must now install a statue of three-time UP CM and former defence minister Mulayam Singh Yadav at Munshipulia crossing, rename the crossing after him and also rename Ismailganj (Ward-I)," the memorandum read.
The SP delegation, comprising corporators Yawar Hussain ‘Reshu', Shafiqur Rehman ‘Chachha', Qamran Beg and SP's Lucknow media incharge Gaurav Singh Yadav, was led by party's Lucknow city president Faqir Siddiqui.
SP will celebrate Mulayam's birth anniversary on Friday by distributing blankets, donating blood, giving away food packets and clothes to the poor, said party's chief spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary.
Party has asked its functionaries and cadre to restrain from any pomp and show during the celebrations.
