Guwahati: One person was arrested in Samaguri, Nagaon district, for allegedly causing the death of a dog that had consumed chickens from his poultry establishment.
The suspect, Dibyajyoti Saikia, also known as Dadul Saikia, from Mikirhat Hatigaon village in Samaguri, struck the dog's head with a bamboo stick on Thursday, resulting in fatal injuries. Saikia defended his action, stating that the dog had taken several chickens from his poultry farm during the previous week.
Subsequently, a social media video showing five puppies nursing from the deceased female dog gained widespread attention, triggering public anger towards the perpetrator. Reports indicate the dog had delivered the puppies merely two days prior.
Following a public outcry, authorities initiated a suo-motu case and took him into custody on Thursday night from his home. The accused is presently under judicial detention.
The Puranigudam outpost in-charge said, "According to the accused's statement, he hit the dog with a bamboo stick with an intention to chase her away as it had eaten chickens from his farm before. However, the stick struck on the dog's head and killed it."
Upon learning about this cruel incident, police registered a case and arrested him on Thursday night. He faces charges under Section 11(1) (I) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,1960 and Section 325 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which specifically criminalises killing, maiming, poisoning, or rendering animals useless.
