Gurgaon: Cybercrime sleuths raided a flat in Sohna on Tuesday and arrested nine persons for organising an online sports betting racket. The organiser of the racket, Sagar, is a native of Hisar. He employed eight other gang members, mostly from Fatehabad, for a Rs 20,000 monthly salary. The accused lured victims by placing gaming app links on social media and making their targets place bets.
Cyber West police raided a flat in GLS Homes Society after receiving an alert. "Our team arrested nine offenders operating an online betting racket," ACP (cybercrime) Priyanshu Diwan said.
Apart from the organiser, police also arrested Sonipat resident Manish, Toshan Kumar, a resident of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, Mohit Gera, Rakesh, Anmol Gillhotra, Manish, Bablu, and Sanyam Mehta, residents of Fatehabad.
Cops found during a preliminary probe that Sagar rented the flat about two months ago and started operating the call centre with eight others.
"The accused invited people to bet by posting gaming site details on social media. They created login IDs for victims, assisted them in placing bets, and transferred money into their bank accounts. Sagar paid Rs 20,000 monthly salary, with some commission to the others," a Gurgaon police spokesperson said.
"The platforms offered betting on cricket, football, horse racing, greyhound racing, tennis, kabaddi, etc. They also offered online casino services. The bank account details of the accused revealed transactions of Rs 20 lakh in betting in two days," said a cybercrime cop.
