It was another morning when Delhi residents woke up to a thick layer of haze engulfing the national capital, while the air quality remained in the 'very poor' category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the national capital recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 379 as of 9 am, placing it in the 'very poor' category.

Drone visuals from around the AIIMS and Kartavya Path showed a layer of smog blanketing the entire area.

Meanwhile, several places recorded an AQI of more than 400, falling under the ‘severe' category. At 9 am, Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 405, Wazipur 436, Bawana 418, Ashok Vihar 414, Alipur 408, Jahangirpuri 435 and Dwarka Sector 8 401.

A few areas, including Patparganj, registered an AQI of 381, IGI Airport 370, Siri Fort 373, Lodhi Road 317, Aya Nagar 359 and ITO 355 -- all under the 'very poor' category.

As per the CPCB, the air quality index from 0 to 50 is considered 'good,' 51 to 100 is 'satisfactory,' 101 to 200 'moderate,' 201 to 300 'poor,' 301 to 400 'very poor,' and from 401 to 500 under the 'severe' category.

The AQI under the 'severe' category can affect healthy people and seriously impact those with existing diseases, while the AQI under the 'very poor' category can cause respiratory illness on prolonged exposure.

Meanwhile, toxic foam was seen floating on the Yamuna River in Kalindi Kunj, as pollution levels in the river continued to remain high on Thursday.

The Regional Meteorological Centre, New Delhi, predicted mainly clear sky, followed by smog or shallow to moderate fog in the morning and smog or shallow fog in the evening and night. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 26 and 11 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has updated the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to introduce stricter measures to combat rising pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The amendments require NCR states to stop physical classes up to Class V in GRAP Stage III and up to Class XII in GRAP Stage IV. It also includes a new directive under Stage III that requires state governments to implement staggered timings for public offices and municipal bodies.

Under GRAP Stage IV, a ‘mask advisory’ has been implemented, encouraging people to wear masks when going outside during periods of poor air quality. The revisions come amid heightened alarm over Delhi-NCR's pollution, which continued to be in the 'severe' category with the AQI levels exceeding 450.

In response to rising air pollution levels, the Delhi Police have also asked social media and e-commerce companies to immediately suspend the online sale and delivery of firecrackers within the National Capital Territory (NCT).
