Jaipur: Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of Rajasthan Police on Wednesday arrested the notorious leader of a robbery gang, who had been evading arrest for the past eight years despite. A reward of Rs 25,000 had been announced for information leading to his capture.
The arrested man, Ghanashyam alias Shyam Bawri (67), is a resident of Dhanupra in Budaun district of Uttar Pradesh. He was apprehended in his village and brought to Rajasthan.
ADG (AGTF) Dinesh MN said Ghanashyam and his gang were responsible for an armed robbery in Nagaur's Gothan area in 2016, in which a man was injured in gunfire. The gang leader had been absconding since that incident, prompting police in Nagaur district to announce the reward for his arrest, he added.
AGTF gathered intelligence on the whereabouts of the accused, and soon reliable information was received by the team that was monitoring organised crime gangs, confirming that Ghanashyam was hiding in his village. With the assistance of local police, an AGTF team raided the village and successfully apprehended the accused. He was brought to Rajasthan and handed over to Nagaur Police for further investigation.
According to police, Ghanashyam led the inter-state Bawariya gang and is linked to 11 cases, including loot, robbery, burglary, attempted murder, and violations of the Arms Act filed at different police stations, including in Bihar's Sitamarhi district. Regarding the gang's modus operandi, an official said Ghanashyam and his gang would scout houses and shops during the day under the guise of selling clothes and strike with illegal weapons at night, threatening and attacking anyone who resisted. tnn
