In my opinion, DnD is more accessible now than before. It was not as popular here as compared to the west is because board or card deck games were restricted to family gathering and also the cost of these DnD games didn't help it going mainstream.
Apart from that, I fondly remember days of chupan chupai and pakadam padai XD...

Cultural differences.
We don't have elves and dragons and the like in our mythology/fantasy literature.
Hell, we don't have any high fantasy literature for that matter(AFAIK). We have a ton of mythology tho!!
Make it "Khahandar aur Kali Billi" and then let it fly!!!
