The Delhi Traffic Police has launched a new initiative aimed at enhancing professionalism among auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers at major locations like airports and railway stations, with an aim to improving the experience of tourists visiting the city. The programme encourages drivers to adhere to proper attire and exhibit respectful behaviour, ensuring tourists and travellers depart with a positive impression of the city, according to an official statement issued on November 20, PTI reported.

A senior police officer explained that the initiative began in November, emphasising the importance of courteous engagement with visitors. "We conduct briefings where we specifically instruct drivers on how to interact with tourists in a polite and professional manner," the officer was quoted as saying by PTI. "We also focus on the importance of wearing their uniforms properly, maintaining a neat and presentable appearance," the officer added.

Additionally, the initiative stresses on the need for drivers to keep their vehicles clean, well-maintained, creating a comfortable atmosphere for passengers. "Most importantly, we remind them that their conduct should be polite, patient, and courteous," the officer shared.

For many visitors to Delhi, their first interaction is with an auto-rickshaw or taxi driver, making this initial encounter crucial in shaping their perception of the city. "If drivers engage with tourists in a professional manner, it leaves a lasting positive impression, enhancing their overall experience," the officer noted.

This program is currently being implemented at key locations, including the airport, railway stations, and areas near Parliament, with an overwhelmingly positive response.

To enforce this initiative, the police are issuing challans to drivers who fail to wear their uniforms while operating in the city. As of November 4, 2024, a total of 4,481 challans had been issued to taxi drivers, and 384 to auto-rickshaw drivers in the New Delhi area for failing to comply with the uniform requirement. In comparison, during the same period in 2023, the number of challans was higher, with 5,106 issued to taxi drivers and 1,012 to auto-rickshaw drivers.
