The deceased were identified as B Rajeswaran, 55, who is visually impaired, deaf and mute, and his sister Banumathi, 50. The fire accident happened when the petrol meant for filling an electricity generator spilt over a lamp, sparking a fire.
Police said B Ramalakshmi from KRG Nagar in Ganapathy had died on Nov 14 and the family had planned for cremation the next day.
The body was kept in a freezer box. Since there was a power shutdown, a generator was brought. S Sriram, a youth from Ganapathy, who brought the generator was attempting to pour petrol into the generator when the fuel spilt over a lamp in front of the body there.
Panicked, Sriram dropped the petrol can down, spilling the entire petrol on the floor. The fire spread rapidly all over the house. While Padmavathi, daughter-in-law of Ramalakshmi succumbed to the burns on the same day, four others including Rajeswaran and Banumathi were admitted to Coimbatore Medical College hospital with severe burns where they died without responding to treatment.
