Guwahati: The "Swahid Smarak Kshetra", a memorial to commemorate the 855 martyrs of the six-year-long Assam Movement from 1979 to 1985, is anticipated to be accessible by early next year. The complex is located in West Boragaon on the periphery of Guwahati.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, while inspecting the site, said the Swahid Smarak Kshetra, upon completion, will serve as a pilgrimage destination honouring the sacrifice of men and women who laid down their lives during the Assam Movement.
He added that while 90% of the complex construction was complete, supplementary work, including light and sound facilities and an auditorium is forthcoming.
This will enhance the aesthetic appeal and visitor amenities at the complex.
The CM said the complex is set to house a meditation hall, a gallery showcasing photographs pertaining to the Assam Movement and an ethnic cuisine outlet for visitors. The 225-foot Smarak symbolises the grandeur of the Assam Agitation and sacrifice of the martyrs, Sarma noted.
He disclosed that photographs of merely 150 out of 855 martyrs were procured for statue installation within the complex. Endeavours to get the remaining photographs are ongoing, he added.
The memorial is being constructed with a financial allocation of Rs 100 crore. However, the CM indicated that additional funding might be necessary to implement the light and sound facilities and auditorium.
The memorial's construction commenced in Dec 2020, with then CM and current union minister Sarbananda Sonowal establishing the foundation stone.
The Assam Movement was orchestrated by the All Assam Students' Union against illegal immigrants in Assam. The movement concluded with the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985.
