Guwahati: Manipur CM N Biren Singh Monday convened a meeting with BJP MLAs and NDA allies at the secretariat in Imphal to discuss the prevailing situation in the state amid NPP’s withdrawal of support to his leadership.
However, in a demonstration of allegiance, BJP’s other principal ally, Naga People’s Front (NPF), proclaimed its continued support to the state govt of which it remains an integral part.
Addressing the media, NPF leader and minister Awangbow Newmai said, “We will continue to support the govt since we continue to be part of the coalition.”
NPF has five legislators in the 60-member house. Conrad Sangma’s NPP is the second largest party with seven legislators.
The BJP govt currently commands a substantial majority well above the requisite threshold and alongside NPF (5 MLAs), has the support of one JD(U) legislator, and three independent MLAs.
Last year, two MLAs of Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) withdrew their support to the Biren Singh govt.
The meeting, which started late evening, was on till the time of filing of this report.
