VARANASI: A successful high-risk balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty was performed on Tuesday on a 10-year-old girl with severe pulmonary stenosis in the Department of Cardiology, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University.
The procedure was carried out by a team comprising Dr Dharmendra Jain, Dr Pratibha Rai, Dr Srishti, and Dr Arjun. The procedure was done under the CM/PM relief fund.
Dr Pratibha said that the case was particularly challenging due to the patient's critical condition, with oxygen saturation at 80% and severe right ventricular dysfunction. Post-procedure, the patient is stable and was discharged after two days.
Since the joining of Dr Pratibha Rai, a paediatric cardiologist, last month, the Department of Cardiology has treated approximately 10 patients with congenital heart diseases. The head of the department, Prof Vikas Agrawal, praised the team's efforts and announced that paediatric cardiology procedures will now be regularly available at IMS, BHU.
Prof Siddharth Lakhotia, head of Cardiac Surgery, expressed great happiness at the start of this much-needed facility. He said that children who previously required open-heart surgery for their heart defects can now be treated without any incision.
