Chennai: Tamil Nadu Food Safety Department has banned the use of non-food grade plastics for packaging or serving food items as per Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSAI) 2006.
Food businesses have been instructed to stop using non-biodegradable materials for wrapping or packing food, tea, and coffee. They must adopt packaging materials that comply with food safety standards.
Commissioner of food safety has authorised designated officers to take action under section 69 for violations. Penalties include: 2,000 for first-time offenders, 5,000 for second-time offenders, 10,000 and cancellation of registration for repeated violations.
Further non-compliance will result in stricter action under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2011. Inspections by food safety officials will be conducted to ensure adherence.
