Ahmedabad: The city crime branch arrested two accused involved in the murder of Alpesh Thakor, who was allegedly killed for tipping off police about an illegal liquor racket. Thakor, a resident of Kankaria Road, died after being attacked by the alleged bootleggers on Sunday night.
The city crime branch, acting on an tip-off, arrested Vicky Chunara and Yuvraj Chunara from the Kagdapith area. The two, along with Vishal Chunara and Jignesh Sharma, attacked Thakor after he allegedly tipped off the cops about the liquor trade.
After arresting the two, the cops searched their houses and found liquor worth Rs 51,600. The cops said that it was a rivalry between the groups as the accused and the victim were involved in the illegal liquor trade in the area.
Sources said that Sharma and his aide were close to the cops and even senior officials of the police station. "Hence, after Thakor tipped off the police, the cops passed on the information to Sharma and his men," said a source.
On Saturday, Thakor lodged a complaint with Kagdapith police stating that he was attacked by Jignesh Sharma and his aides. But instead of acting swiftly, the police merely registered an application without initiating a formal investigation. In response to the public outcry, police commissioner G S Malik suspended Kagdapith inspector S A Patel for failing to act on Alpesh's complaint. Malik, however, denied claims that police leaked Alpesh's complaint to the bootleggers, sparking the deadly revenge.
