Ahmedabad: In a meeting of the water and sewerage committee convened on Tuesday, a proposition was sanctioned to refurbish the Chandrabhaga canal from Prabodh Rawal Bridge to Kaligam Underpass in the Ranip ward of the city. The canal, extending two kilometres, will be renovated utilising RCC boxes, retaining walls, and a 1200mm diameter storm water drainage line, with an expenditure of Rs 151.75 crore.
Additionally, a tender worth Rs 50.97 crore was floated for the refurbishment of the canal section extending to Sabarmati, which is in process.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation stated in the proposal that the Chandrabhaga canal passes through areas such as Sabarmati Railway Colony, Kaligam, Ranip Bakramandi, Prabodh Rawal Bridge, and from the Jalvihar STP plant to the Sabarmati River. For years, sewage from surrounding areas was discharged into the Chandrabhaga canal, leading to pollution and posing health risks to nearby residents.
Local corporators and the MLA persistently advocated for the development of the Chandrabhaga canal. The AMC conducted a comprehensive survey of the canal section between Kaligam and Prabodh Rawal Bridge and calculated the development expenditure at Rs 146.32 crore, against which a proposal of Rs 151.75 crore received authorisation.
In the first phase, the canal stretching from Prabodh Rawal Bridge to Kaligam will undergo refurbishment with a storm water drainage system, whilst in the second phase, initiatives will be implemented to renovate the section from Jawahar Chowk to Saat Garnala in Sabarmati, for which a tender of Rs 50.97 crore was issued.
