Varanasi: Following an encounter, a gangster and cattle smuggler, identified as Neeraj Gaur, was arrested under Mungra Badshahpur station in Jaunpur district early on Monday. The criminal also sustained bullet injuries in his leg in the encounter.
The Mungra Badshahpur police were checking suspicious vehicles in Nibhapur area early on Monday when they received a tip-off about two cattle smugglers riding a blue motorcycle. The informer told the police that the criminals went to Lamhan (Maharajganj) village to buy animals. They also told the cops that the criminals were armed and were heading towards Jalalpur via Madiyahu. As the motorcycle approached, the police attempted to stop it but the criminals sped up to escape. During the chase, the criminal riding pillion fired at the police. In self-defence, station officer Santosh Pathak fired a round, hitting one of the criminals. The other criminal took advantage of the darkness and fled.
The injured criminal was found with a gunshot wound in his right leg and was bleeding. Upon questioning, the accused identified himself as Neeraj Gaur from village Korri, Jalalpur police station, Jaunpur. A 315 bore pistol, two 315 bore empty cartridges, one 09 MM empty cartridge and a motorcycle were seized. tnn
The police said that efforts are ongoing to locate the absconding accused Sandeep Patel, a resident of Sugulpur village, Madiyahu police station, Jaunpur district. The accused was involved in cattle smuggling, NDPS and Arms Act cases at Jalalpur, Khetasarai, and Newadhiya police stations.
