Guwahati: A decomposed body of a woman, who has been missing from Guwahati since last month, was exhumed by police in Dhubri district's Chapar on Monday.
The woman and her husband were reported missing at Bharalumukh PS on Oct 3. An investigation to find the duo led to the discovery of the body.
Police sources revealed the husband's involvement in his wife's murder and in burying her near the Tokrabandha hills in Chapar. The husband, identified as Rofikul Islam, an e-rickshaw driver in the city, is now on the run. Chapar OS Dipjyoti Ingti said the victim, identified as Romena Khatun, was killed at least a month ago.
According to sources at Bharalumukh PS, the victim's mother lodged a missing complaint of her daughter and son-in-law on Oct 3.
"The couple, who used to live in the Shantipur hillside area, went to the husband's ancestral home on Oct 2. Unable to reach out to the couple, the victim's mother filed a missing complaint a day later," the source said.
The source added that initially it was assumed that the duo was missing. "However, few days later, we got leads about the husband being alive and the wife being died. We picked up the accused's brother, who revealed crucial information. On Monday, police searched his ancestral home and exhumed the body," the source added.
The body was brought to Guwahati for an autopsy on Monday evening.
The victim's mother accused Rofikul of killing her daughter for property. "On Oct 2, she went to Tokrabandha with around Rs 4, 00,000 in cash and her jewellery. Since then, we have not heard from her. Prior to Romena, Rafikul was married three times," the mother revealed to media.
