Bengaluru: A 31-year-old woman was accused of uploading child pornography content online and cheated of more than Rs 1 lakh by cybercrooks recently.
According to a complaint lodged by the west Bengaluru resident with Annapoorneshwarinagar police, she received a call from an unknown number on Nov 13. The caller introduced himself as her mobile service provider's customer support staffer and told her that a SIM card procured using her Aadhaar card was used to upload child pornography. She was told she needed to complain to Mumbai cyber crime police and obtain a police clearance certificate to avoid disconnection.
As the woman panicked, the fraudster told her he would connect her to cyber police. She received a WhatsApp call from another number and a person claiming to be a Mumbai cyber police officer threatened her with arrest. On the pretext of a virtual investigation and verifying the bank account, she was made to transfer over Rs 1.1 lakh. As they demanded more money, she became suspicious and lodged a complaint. The case has been registered under the Information Technology Act.
