Experts feel social media companies must be kept on a leash

Aruna Sharma, a former Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeItY), spoke about the importance of governing social media. She said Google does not fit the usual idea of social media. Many countries have commercial deals without government control. This shows a need for clear rules on mandatory bargaining, which MeITY has considered for two years.


Sharma also observed that big data companies tried to control countries but had to follow the rules in the end. Ad money is moving to data companies. Once a bargaining code starts, the government should step in for any complaints. India, using many search engines, cannot accept unconvincing reasons from big tech companies.

NS Nappinai, a Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court, talked about social media’s duties in stopping false information. Keeping the press — democracy's fourth pillar — safe is vital. Nappinai said if data trains AI, it should follow set rules. India should not just watch technology change but take action. The rights of people must stay safe.

Nappinai also stressed fair pay for content makers. Fair payment sets an equal ground for creators. Solving these problems is key for honest digital talks and keeping democracy safe, Nappinai said.
