Patna: A 12-year-old child, Amrit Raj, sustained a serious eye injury after allegedly being hit by his teacher at a private school in Arwal district for not completing his homework. The child is undergoing treatment at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in the state capital, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred at a school located in Umairabad locality under Sadar police station area of Arwal on November 13, while a police complaint was registered by the Amrit's family on Sunday.
Amrit's father, Sanjeet Kumar, a native of Sarauti village under Rampur Chauram police area of Arwal, works as a teacher in the same school.
Amrit's family accused three people, including the school principal, his wife, and the teacher, of seriously injuring the boy's eye. However, till Monday police did not arrest the accused or summon them to the police station for an inquiry.
According to the complaint, Amrit, did not complete his homework due to illness and absence from the school the previous day. To penalise him, the teacher severely hit Amrit with a wooden stick, resulting in serious injury to his left eye.
Following the incident, Amrit was rushed to the sadar hospital, from where he was referred to the ophthalmology department of the IGIMS, for specialised care. Medical professionals at the IGIMS diagnosed him with diminished vision and retinal injuries stemming from severe trauma, said hospital sources.
"A case has been lodged against the management of the school, including Ranjeet Singh, the school's principal, his spouse, and the teacher, Prince Kumar. The family has complained of physical assault, leading to severe injury to one eye of the child. Further investigation is going on," said Arwal SP, Rajendra Kumar Bheel.
According to a Sadar police official, the school management officials intially tried to suppress the matter after being reported to them by the family.
