In the 2024 Assembly election in Maharashtra, the Kandivali East seat is witnessing a fierce poll battle between Atul Bhatkhalkar and Kalu Budheliya.

Bhatkhalkar, who wrested the seat from former Congress MLA Thakur Ramesh Singh in 2014 and secured another term in 2019, is eyeing a hattrick from Kandivali East, this time on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.

Established during the 2008 delimitation exercise, the Kandivali East Assembly constituency comprises areas like Ashok Nagar, Poisar, parts of Malad East, Hanuman Nagar and Lokhandwala Township. It is home to a mix of affluent, middle-class as well as economically-weaker sections.

The poll campaign's prime focus is on slum rehabilitation, traffic decongestion and better infrastructure.

The Kandivli East segment falls under the Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency — a stronghold of the BJP — represented by Union Minister Piyush Goyal in Lok Sabha.

In 2019, the BJP emerged as the single-largest party in Maharashtra during the Assembly election, securing a win in 105 of the 288 seats, while the then undivided Shiv Sena got 56 seats. The Congress and NCP, meanwhile, got 44 and 54 seats, respectively.

However, the BJP and Shiv Sena alliance soon fell apart over the chief minister's post, despite a clear majority, resulting in the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Later, the MVA government suffered a major setback after the Eknath Shinde-led camp rebelled against the then Uddhav Thackeray-led government in June 2022, leading to an unprecedented split in Shiv Sena.

In July last year, a similar split was seen in the NCP when Ajit Pawar parted ways with his uncle Sharad Pawar and joined the ruling Mahayuti.
