Jhansi: Two of the three critically ill infants rescued and receiving medical care after the blaze in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Jhansi Medical College on Friday succumbed to their pre-existing medical conditions during treatment on Sunday.
Jhansi district magistrate Avinash Kumar said that the infants had no burn injuries and were suffering from severe pre-existing ailments. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, both the infants could not be saved. Medical College principal Dr Narendra Singh Senger said, "The baby weighed just 1.06 kg at birth and suffered from premature hernia and sepsis, which significantly compromised her chances of survival," adding that the infant's body was handed over to her family.
Later in the evening, a second infant, suffering from respiratory ailments since birth, also passed away. This child, from Jalaun, weighed 2.08 kg at birth and had been admitted to the hospital on Nov 12, he said. The third infant, currently under treatment, remains in a critical but stable condition.
