Former deputy chief minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal has stepped down as the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), senior party leader Daljit Singh Cheema informed on Saturday.
In a post on X, Cheema informed that Badal submitted his resignation to the working committee of the party on November 16 to pave the way for the election of a new president.
Sukhbir Badal, son of former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and husband of Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, has thanked the party leaders and workers for “expressing confidence in his leadership and extending wholehearted support and cooperation throughout the tenure,” Cheema said.
In another post, Cheema said that the party's working committee president Balwinder Singh Bhundar has called an emergency meeting of the party's working committee at 12 pm on November 18 at SAD headquarters in Chandigarh.
“The committee will consider the resignation submitted by S Sukhbir Sing Badal and will decide on further course of action,” he added.
It must be noted that the elections for the various posts of president, office bearers and working committee in the Shiromani Akali Dal are scheduled for December 14 when the five-year term of the present house expires.
This comes after Sukhbir Singh Badal was earlier declared as ‘tankhaiya’ – guilty of religious misconduct – by the Akal Takht.
Recently, he urged the Akal Takht Jathedar to pronounce his punishment for religious misconduct charges, mentioning that over two months have passed since he was declared tankhaiya.
Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh had on August 30 this year declared Badal as tankhaiya for the ‘mistakes’ committed by the party as well as its government between 2007 to 2017, PTI reported.
However, the Jathedar has still not pronounced tankhah (religious punishment) for Badal.
While Badal failed to get any temporary relief, the party had on October 24 informed that it would not contest the by-polls in Punjab.
Few rebel SAD leaders, including former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Bibi Jagir Kaur and ex-MP Prem Singh Chandumajra, had on July 1 appeared before the Akal Takht to seek forgiveness for the ‘mistakes’ that were committed during the SAD government.
