Author Stephen King has quit the microblogging platform X over the ‘too toxic’ atmosphere.
In an X post on Thursday, the famous author wrote, “I’m leaving Twitter. Tried to stay, but the atmosphere has just become too toxic.”
It seems the 77-year-old King of Horror preferred Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta-owned Threads over billionaire Elon Musk’s X.
“Follow me on Threads, if you like,” King added in his last post on X.
Several social media users reacted to Stephen King's announcement with humour and speculation. “This isn’t an airport. No need to announce your departure,” a user wrote. Another user asked if he would be joining the social media platform similar to X, writing, “BLUESKY @StephenKing?”
Elon Musk's recent appearance in a Trump family photo sparked a wave of memes and jokes about him being the new ‘First Lady’. The rumours gained momentum when people thought author Stephen King was kicked off from X for calling Musk ‘Trump's First Lady’.
However, King clarified that he wasn't the one who started the rumour and wasn't kicked off from X either.
King denied the rumours that X's owner, Elon Musk, kicked him out from the platform after joking about the billionaire's friendship with President-elect Donald Trump.
“I see there's a rumour going around that I called the Musk-man Trump's new first lady. I didn't, but only because I didn't think of it,” he wrote on X on Wednesday.
“There's also a rumour going around that Muskie kicked me off Twitter. Yet here I am,” King added. The Tesla CEO surprisingly responded to his tweet and wrote, “Hi Steve!”
It's worth noting that King has been frequently critical of Elon Musk. He identifies himself as a Democrat and has poked fun at Musk on several occasions for his support for Trump.
For instance, King posted a picture of his dog, with the caption, “Molly, aka the Thing of Evil, considers putting the bite on the Musk-man.” He also joked about Musk's prolific tweeting, saying, "The Musk-man has posted 3,000 times on X in the last month."
Earlier, the author threatened to quit the platform following the report of $20 per month charges for the verified blue tick on X.
