Hyderabad: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasised the crucial role of research in shaping modern India's future during his address at the ISB Insights Summit on Friday, calling it a "renaissance" that will drive the nation's growth story.
Speaking to a gathering of business students and academics, Pradhan urged institutions to tap into India's rich cultural and philosophical heritage for research that benefits society. "Our ancient wisdom, combined with modern innovation, can offer solutions to contemporary challenges," he said.
The minister also stressed the importance of considering the needs of India's 300 million students in future policy-making. "As India's purchasing power is set to grow, we must ensure our education system evolves to meet the aspirations of our young population," he stated.
Citing statistics, Pradhan pointed out that the number of startups in the country rose from 350 in 2014 to 1.2 lakh in 2024. "According to a NABARD survey, the income of rural households has increased by 37.6%, and the nation has already become a global leader in online payments. This reflects the aspirations of the world's most populous country."
Pradhan also praised the institution's research-focused approach. "When premier institutions like ISB prioritise research, it sparks a ripple effect of innovation across society," he remarked, emphasising the need for multidisciplinary education.
The minister also discussed technology's transformative role in education. "AI will revolutionise how Indians communicate across linguistic barriers," he predicted. "We envision a future where technology bridges communication gaps between different regions of India and the world."
Pradhan concluded by mentioning the Odia festival of Bali Jatra, celebrated on Kartik Purnima to mark the voyages of ancient sea traders, as well as the birthday of Birsa Munda.
