Lucknow: A robbery accused who was injured in a police encounter on Oct 22 in Jankipuram, passed away on Friday while undergoing treatment at SGPGI.
An inquiry has been ordered into the death, as per standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Accused Kamlesh Tiwari, who faced 42 cases of chain-snatching and robbery, was receiving medical attention following his arrest. According to ADCP (North) Jitendra Kumar Dubey, the injuries sustained during the encounter were unrelated to his death. "After his arrest, he was produced before a magistrate and was undergoing treatment for an illness," Dubey said, adding that the post-mortem examination report is awaited. The incident leading to his arrest occurred on Oct 22 at around 9pm when the crime branch and Jankipuram police were conducting vehicle checks near Bhitauli crossing.
Two scooter riders, upon being signalled to stop, attempted to flee. One of them, later identified as Kamlesh, fired at the police, prompting retaliatory fire. Kamlesh sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while his accomplice managed to escape. He was immediately taken to the trauma centre for treatment and subsequently lodged in Gosaiganj jail.
Kamlesh was known for targeting elderly citizens. One such incident involved robbing 62-year-old Shailbala, a resident of Jankipuram Sector-F, while she was walking with her granddaughter. The miscreants pretended to ask for directions before snatching her chain and fleeing the scene.
The police have handed over Tiwari's body to his family after conducting a post-mortem examination. His family has not made any allegations so far.
However, the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, with authorities emphasising transparency in the probe.
