Ahmedabad: A shootout in the bustling Nehrunagar area left a vegetable vendor fighting for his life. Badaji Marwadi was shot by an unidentified assailant on Saturday evening while he was tending to his shop.
Marwadi's condition is said to be critical.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (M Division) A B Valand, confirmed the incident. Marwadi sustained critical injuries and was immediately rushed to Jivraj Mehta Hospital. His family, also present at the hospital, is yet to provide details about the motive behind the attack. Once the FIR is registered, it will be clear if the victim received any threats.
Valand said that the incident took place on Saturday evening when Marwadi was at his shop near a Jain Derasar on the road towards Manekbaug from Nehrunagar.
"Eyewitness accounts suggest that two individuals on a motorcycle were involved in the shooting. One of them opened fire. Employees in Marwadi's shop tried to pursue the accused, but the latter managed to escape. We are currently scrutinizing CCTV footage from nearby shops and areas to identify the assailants," said inspector B D Jhilariya of Ellisbridge police station.
A senior police officer said, "Marwadi's brother was murdered last year. We have also learnt from our initial inquiries that there was an attempt on Marwadi's life last month too." The officer added that the attack could be the result of an old family rivalry.
