Gurgaon: As many as 3,224 drivers were fined Rs 1.6 crore for using mobile phones while driving in the city between Jan and Oct this year.
Traffic police said they were running a special campaign to discourage citizens from using phones while driving in order to increase compliance with traffic rules. "Teams were stationed at various locations to check vehicles for drivers using mobile phones. Those found flouting the rules were fined," deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Virender Vij said on Friday.
In this week itself, Gurgaon police found 439 drivers guilty of the offence and they were fined Rs 21.95 lakh in total, in compliance with Motor Vehicle Act.
As part of the drive, police stationed teams at all major intersections and highways in the street and also relied on CCTV footage to identify drivers violating this rule.
In an attempt to sensitise citizens of dangers of using mobile phones while driving, enforcement teams initiated awareness programmes in schools, colleges, and corporate offices, using real-life accident scenarios to demonstrate the devastating consequences of the practice.
"We advised motorists to pull over in case they needed to use their phones instead of taking calls while driving or connecting their phones to the Bluetooth in their cars and rising their lives," said the officer.
