MANGALURU: A state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is set to be constructed at Pacchanady for systematic processing of dry waste from all 60 wards under the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).
The initiative, launched under Swaccha Bharat Mission 2.0, requires Rs 11.04 crore in funding.
The MCC will provide Rs 5.94 crore, with the remainder coming from Central and state governments. Following the state technical committee's approval of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the facility will process 109 tons of waste daily using scientific methods.
The MCC has initiated the tender process, focusing on two key aspects: construction of civil structures and procurement of essential equipment and machinery for the MRF operations.
MCC Commissioner Anand CL informed TOI about the corporation's responsibility to operationalise the MRF through a suitable agency. "The work of the new MRF is expected to be completed by February next year.
The new MRF will reduce the burden of legacy waste at Pachanady. Dry waste, including plastic waste generated in 60 wards of the city, will be segregated scientifically at the MRF and sent for recycling," the Commissioner stated, noting that the city produces 290 tons of waste daily.
"Dry waste is being collected by the MCC once a week on Fridays. We are planning to introduce a separate vehicle so that dry waste can be collected twice a week after the opening of the new MRF.
Currently, the MCC manages wet waste effectively at Pachanady through an agency," the Commissioner added.
