Ahmedabad: A two-day film festival will begin today at Citizen Nagar, the rehabilitation colony for those displaced during the 2002 riots. The event is planned to draw people's attention to the plight of residents in the area, which is situated right beside the garbage dump of Pirana.
Half a dozen NGOs, along with the US department of state bureau of educational and cultural affairs, have joined hands to screen six films, including the much-appreciated "Superman of Malegaon". The two-day event has been named the Citizen Nagar Film Festival, where the films to be screened are "Eed Allay Ooo" by Pratik Vats, "Joy Run" by Deblina, "Holy Rights" by Farha Khatun, "Amdavad Ma Famous" by Hardik Mehta, and "Kayo Kayo Colour" by Shahrukh Khan Chavda.
According to activist Kaleem Siddiqui, the event is organised in arguably the most polluted area of the city to highlight the problems of the colony. "The garbage mound is just next to this rehabilitation colony, but nobody is bothered about the violation of a norm that such a garbage dump cannot be within 500m of a human habitation. We have invited the officials of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), including the commissioner. We hope they come and see the plight of the residents in this locality."
